“Be flexible, be open, be humble, be grateful, be prepared and be passionate”. These principles were the most valuable lessons I gained from my experience in an isolated community in Nepal. I was pushed far beyond my comfort zone and I found myself surrounded by strangers from diverse cultural backgrounds, disciplines, and clinical experiences.

Throughout the trip, I was rewarded with many unexpected gifts: new friendships, a sense of achievement, and, most importantly, a glimpse into my future career and potential. As nurses, we must not only care for those in need but also understand the rationale behind our actions, hence the importance of studying physiology, pharmacology, and related fields.

One important insight was that geographic constraints where we visited meant only a few individuals could typically attend health talks, even though this was a community of around 600 people. Fortunately, we managed to attract 15 attendees and even organised a small health talk outside our original plan. Although it was a modest event, it underscored the importance of maintaining openness and flexibility. The satisfaction I felt was absolutely worth the effort.

Working alongside inspiring individuals during this trip helped me clarify the path I want to pursue and the kind of nurse I aspire to become – one who is driven by purpose, curiosity, and compassion.
