President and Vice-Chancellor
The University of Hong Kong
The 25 Anniversary of the School of Nursing of The University of Hong Kong in 2020 offers a
th
wonderful opportunity to not only recognize the School’s many milestone achievements, but also
to pay tribute to the thousands of nursing alumni who have dedicated their careers to protecting
lives and safeguarding communities.
From its humble beginning as a small department with 42 students at Queen Mary Hospital, the
School of Nursing in the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine has been transformed into one of Asia’s
leading nursing schools, admitting over 400 students each year. Its forward-looking programmes
are designed to prepare students to assume leadership roles in the community, whether it be in
nursing education, research, or practice.
During these extraordinary times, we are constantly reminded that the critical work of nurses
and other frontline medical workers is truly selfless, with countless individuals relying on their
compassion, commitment, and professionalism to provide the best patient care under the most
trying circumstances.
As we inch closer to a post-COVID world, it is clear that nurses and other healthcare professionals
will play an increasingly important role in strengthening preparedness for a myriad of future health
challenges. With 25 years of knowledge and experience, and guided by constant innovation,
the School of Nursing is well-positioned to impact our students with the relevant clinical and
leadership skills and ensure their readiness in an ever-changing healthcare environment.
I take this opportunity to offer my heartfelt congratulations on the School’s 25 Anniversary.
th
This is a time for reflection, and more importantly, a time to look ahead with courage, compassion
and a renewed commitment to service. Together, we can nurse the world back to health.
