Noel Po Tai CHAN

Dr Noel Chan is an Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong, School of Nursing. She is a member of Grandfather Fellowship of the Hong Kong College of Education & Research in Nursing, the Provisional Hong Kong Academy of Nursing. She received her Ph.D. in Social Medicine from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research interest include childhood obesity, anthropometry, nutrition, physical activities, family and puberty. Dr. Chan validated a self-reported waist circumference, body weight and height measures for identifying overweight/obese children and classifying those with a clustering of cardiometabolic risk factors. Currently, she is conducting projects to identify a practical waist circumference self-measurement protocol for assessing obesity in children and adolescents. Through using a novel approach of self-measurement waist circumference, Dr Chan would like to raise the awareness of parents/guardians on their children’s central obesity status and cardiometabolic risk. She developed an educational progamme to teach parents/guardians to prevent or reduce excess weight gain of their children by making small, achievable lifestyle changes. Her additional research area is in alcohol-related harm. She is a co-investigator of the research project entitled “Develop health education materials to facilitate healthcare professionals to reduce alcohol-related harm” which is funded by the Department of Health, Hong Kong.
