Japan is usually associated with an energetic image because of the many innovative ideas and advanced products created there. However, Japan is no exception in facing the challenge of a “super-ageing society”, which is also being encountered by many Asian countries. To overcome this challenge, Japan has developed a comprehensive long-term care system and encouraged modifications of the healthcare industry. In this exchange programme to Osaka University, we learnt about the country’s strategies and explored how technology can help us to care for the elderly. This experience not only expanded our professional knowledge but also made us reflect on our healthcare system and the real needs of the elderly.
