Our exchange experience at Jönköping University in Sweden was a profound journey into palliative nursing care and cultural appreciation. Located amid the peaceful scenery of Lake Vättern, the environment of Jönköping deepened our appreciation of holistic care and how a calming environment can support the well-being of both patients and caregivers.
In lectures and practical workshops with Swedish nursing students, we had open conversations about life and death. We were encouraged to express personal preferences regarding end-of-life care, which deepened our emotional preparedness and empathy. The most memorable moment was learning about the local ritual of opening a window after a patient's passing, symbolising the soul's peaceful departure. This simple yet powerful gesture reflected the cultural sensitivity embedded in Swedish care practices.
We were impressed by Sweden’s dignity-focused palliative care, empowering patients to decide their treatment and involving families respectfully. The Swedish healthcare system also emphasises close teamwork among nurses, doctors, social workers, and spiritual counsellors to address physical, emotional, and spiritual needs.
Beyond academics, cultural experiences like shared meals, skiing, and conversations with locals broadened our perspective and personal growth. This exchange deepened our clinical knowledge and commitment to compassionate, culturally sensitive, patient-centred nursing care.
