During our exchange programme at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, we gained valuable insights into Taiwan’s healthcare system and culture.
At Taipei Veterans General Hospital, we observed how holistic and preventive approaches, including the integration of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, are effectively implemented within a well-equipped, patient-centred environment supported by the National Health Insurance system.
Clinical observations in neurosurgery and orthopaedics highlighted the seamless collaboration of interdisciplinary teams. We saw how nurses play vital roles in pain management, medication safety, and ethical decision-making. Lectures on pharmaceutical care and simulation labs further deepened our understanding of local practices, including differences in catheterisation techniques and patient education.
Beyond the hospital, leadership workshops and case discussions with international students expanded our global perspective and enhanced our communication skills. Cultural activities—such as dumpling-making and exploring local food and landmarks—fostered personal growth and helped us appreciate the warmth of Taiwanese hospitality.
This experience strengthened our commitment to compassionate, culturally sensitive, and collaborative nursing care. It also inspired us to reflect on how healthcare systems and cultural values influence patient outcomes—lessons we will carry into our future nursing careers.
