30th Anniversary Lecture

The HKU School of Nursing 30th Anniversary Lecture, one of the milestone events of our anniversary celebrations, was successfully held in May, featuring Associate Professor Eugene Liu, Chief Sustainability Officer of the National University of Singapore’s National University Health System.

The event commenced with welcoming remarks by School Director Professor Chia-Chin Lin, followed by officiating guests. Professor Peng Gong, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Development) at HKU, gave the opening remarks and Dr the Honourable Ching-choi Lam, SBS, JP, Chairman of the HKSAR’s Council for Carbon Neutrality & Sustainable Development, gave the officiating address.

Professor Liu then delivered his distinguished lecture on “Integrating Sustainability into Healthcare Practices”. He focused on the need for healthcare professionals to adopt sustainable practices in light of the industry’s environmental impact, and he highlighted various strategies, including green initiatives, energy efficiency, waste reduction, and the adoption of a circular economy model. Professor Liu further touched on integrating green principles into clinical protocols, facility design and supply chain management, as well as the role of policy in driving change and lessons learned from implementation.

The insightful presentation was well-received by the participants in the full-house event, and concluded with Professor Chak-sing Lau, BBS, JP, Vice-President & Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health) and Dean of Medicine at HKU, presenting a souvenir of appreciation to Professor Liu.

A number of high-profile guests attended the event, including our former School Heads, Professor Sophia Chan Siu-chee, Professor and Director of the HKU Primary Health Care Academy and Senior Advisor to the HKU President's Office, and Professor Agnes Tiwari, Chairman of The Nursing Council of Hong Kong, as well as clinical partners from the Health Bureau, Department of Health, Hospital Authority Head Office, public and private Hospitals, and the deanery and school directors from HKUMed. The event was a true celebration of collaboration and knowledge sharing within the healthcare community.
