The curriculum provides a broad and comprehensive foundation in nursing knowledge and covers diverse subjects, including Human Anatomy and Physiology, General Psychology, Microbiology and Applied Pharmacology, Law and Ethics, and Chinese Medicine, among others. Students may participate in patient care and health projects within the medical faculty and engage in inter-professional learning and simulations.

Didactic courses are taught in English at the HKU campus, while clinical practicum, preparation courses for the National Nurse Licensing Examination (NNLE) and a module on Patient-Centered Care and Customer Experience Management are conducted in Mandarin/ Cantonese in Mainland China.

The BSc(Nurs) is a self-funded, four-year full-time undergraduate programme with a normative study period of four academic years (including three summer semesters) and a maximum duration of six years.
The curriculum* comprises 43 credit-bearing courses (totalling 276 credits), including 26 professional courses, 4 clinical practicum courses, 6 common core courses, 3 language courses, 4 courses specifically prepared for the NNLE and additional non-credit-bearing courses.
The comprehensive curriculum equips students with the essential nursing knowledge and skills necessary to pass the NNLE and become registered nurses in Mainland China.
Our state-of-the-art facilities, featuring advanced classrooms, laboratories and a simulation nursing skills training centre, seamlessly integrate theoretical learning with practical application. The holistic approach develops well-rounded nursing professionals capable of adapting to diverse healthcare environments and leading in various clinical settings.

Clinical Practicum

The BSc(Nurs) programme strongly emphasises nursing practice and highlights the integration of theory with practice. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, students will progressively master knowledge and skills across various nursing fields.

Clinical placements are arranged in community healthcare facilities and top teaching hospitals such as the HKU-Shenzhen Hospital, ensuring that students can apply their acquired knowledge in real work environments.
Modes of Learning

The BSc(Nurs) programme utilises diverse teaching methods and learning strategies such as problem-based learning, interdisciplinary learning, audiovisual learning, computer-assisted learning, active learning activities, skill demonstrations, field trips and educational visits to clinical agencies and community facilities.
Also, the curriculum includes seminars, tutorials, group discussions, guided group activities, laboratory simulations and clinical practicum.
For courses in life sciences and clinical pharmacology, students gain practical laboratory experience in specific areas such as anatomy, physiology, microbiology and pharmacology.
Nursing skills are strengthened through a blend of demonstrations, simulations, video playback, e-learning and practice, ensuring a comprehensive skill set for future nursing leaders.
Students who complete the programme requirements are eligible to take the National Nurse Licensing Examination (NNLE)*. After passing the NNLE and completing the registration review, they can become registered nurses in Mainland China, embarking on a rewarding and promising career in healthcare.
Graduates who have obtained the qualification of registered nurses in Mainland China can also apply to the Nursing Council of Hong Kong (NCHK) for approval to take the licensing examination. Upon passing the exam, they are qualified to practice nursing in Hong Kong.
Graduates, after having passed the NNLE, may choose to further their studies by pursuing a Master of Nursing and then Doctor of Nursing programmes, etc., at HKU or advancing their academic development in the global arena.
In addition to the required attributes and competencies as a professional nurse, graduates are equipped to independently conduct assessments and appraisals of community healthcare needs. They can pursue careers in multiple areas such as clinical nursing, nursing research, education or management in Mainland China and/ or beyond.
Graduates are provided with ample opportunities to develop a structured career path, featuring a promising career ladder and progression pathway. In particular, professional nurse leaders, who are in great demand in top-tier and high-end medical institutions in Mainland China and beyond, are associated with a highly respected and prestigious healthcare professional status in society.

Scholarships*
The BSc(Nurs) programme offers scholarships for students with outstanding academic performance, supported by New Frontier (NF)/ United Family Healthcare (UFH), etc.

To be eligible for admission to the curriculum leading to the degree of BSc(Nurs), candidates shall:
- comply with the General Regulations;
- comply with the Regulations for First Degree Curricula; and
- satisfy the admission committee in an admission test, if required.
Admission Requirements
The self-funded undergraduate BSc(Nurs) programme mainly admits non-local students via:
- Mainland China’s National Joint College Entrance Examination (NJCEE) or Gaokao (Current Year);
- The total score (excluding bonus points) must exceed the Tier-One Line (一本线) or Special Admissions Control Line (特殊类型招生控制分数线) of the applicant’s province/ municipality; and
- Core subject scores must include Chinese, Mathematics and English.
- An international qualification or other national examination qualifications other than Mainland China’s National Joint College Entrance Examination (NJCEE) or GaoKao (Current Year);
- International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma; or
- General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level (AL)/ International Advanced Level (IAL); or
- Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT)/ Advanced Placement (AP); or
- Equivalent qualifications.
- Personal Statement; and
- Interview.
Remarks: Conditional offers will be granted based on interview and personal statement performance, subject to meeting Gaokao/ international qualification requirements. Firm offers will follow the release of Gaokao/ international qualification results.
Application for Admission Fee (non-refundable): US$60 (subject to change in subsequent academic years).
Composition Fee: HK$218,000 per academic year (subject to change in subsequent academic years).
Off-campus Housing: HK$30,000 to HK$50,000 per year (depending on the housing type and district).
Living Expenses: Up to HK$50,000 per year (based on the lifestyle of an average student living in Hong Kong).

Student Visa
All students without the right of abode/ right to land in Hong Kong must apply for a student visa from the Hong Kong Immigration Department (ImmD) for the purpose of education. It is the responsibility of individual students to make appropriate visa arrangements before they come to Hong Kong.
All student visa applications are required to have a local sponsor. You should request the HKU Admissions Office, Registry (AO) to be your visa sponsor. Please click here for details of the visa application procedures
Either you have received the Firm Offer of Admission or the Conditional Offer of Admission from HKU, please submit your visa application as early as possible. The processing time for the student visa application is approximately 10-12 weeks. Please click here for Mainland China students or here for Overseas students for further details.
Upon successful application, a “Notification Slip for Entry Visa/ Permit” (e-Visa) will be granted by ImmD. AO will send you through email a link for downloading the e-Visa. However, the email with the e-Visa will ONLY be sent after you have uploaded a copy of the Firm Offer of Admission to the application system.
Mainland students should apply for an “Exit-entry Permit for Travelling to and from Hong Kong and Macao” (EEP) and a relevant Exit Endorsement from the relevant Mainland authorities. Please bring along the EEP bearing the relevant Exit Endorsement and the e-Visa to enter Hong Kong for activation of the student visa.
Your duration of stay in Hong Kong should be aligned with the period granted by ImmD as printed on the e-Visa. For full-time degree students, you are advised to enter Hong Kong to activate your student visa only about 2 weeks before your programme commencement for registration and orientation purposes.
