The U21 Health Sciences Group Nursing and Midwifery Discipline Group Research Postgraduate Symposium 2024 was successfully held at The University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital on December 7, 2024.  The symposium marked a remarkable convergence of 15 research postgraduates from 9 prestigious universities, including Fudan University, Korea University, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, The University of Birmingham, The University of Glasgow, The University of Hong Kong, The University of Johannesburg, The University of Nottingham and University College Dublin.  This hybrid event, hosted by HKU School of Nursing and streamed online for broader accessibility, provided a vibrant platform for emerging scholars to present their innovative research.  With over 100 registrants, both onsite and online, the symposium fostered a lively exchange of ideas and collaboration. The event was kick-started by a warm welcome by Professor Roinah Ngunyulu from The University of Johannesburg and concluded by Professor Chia-Chin Lin from The University of Hong Kong. Outstanding presentations were selected by an esteemed adjudicator panel: Professor Yan Hu from Fudan University, Professor Ping Guo from The University of Birmingham and Professor Daniel Fong from The University of Hong Kong.

The symposium was not just a forum for sharing knowledge but a celebration of academic excellence.  Each postgraduate presented their research in a concise, impactful three-minute presentation with a single static PowerPoint slide, capturing the essence of their work.  To honour the exceptional contributions, three Outstanding Presentation Awards were presented to:

  • Ms Nattaporn Ontrakrai (The University of Birmingham) – “Developing a Community-based Paediatric Palliative Care Course for Health Volunteers in a Rural Area of Northern Thailand”
  • Ms Ying Yao (The University of Hong Kong) – “Personalized Chat-based Support for Smoking Cessation among Smokers with Mental Health Symptoms in the Workplace: A Randomized Controlled Trial”
  • Ms Fen Ye (The University of Hong Kong) – “Developing Instant Messages-delivered Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Using a Co-design Approach for Family Caregivers in a Dementia Context”

Each presentation underscored the symposium’s commitment to nurturing intellectual growth, fostering collaboration and highlighted the mission to cultivate future leaders in Nursing and Midwifery across borders.  This significant event set the stage for continued success and evolution, leaving participants inspired and motivated to drive meaningful change in their fields.
