The U21 Health Sciences Nursing and Midwifery Group Research Postgraduate Symposium 2024, held on March 5, marked an exceptional convergence of 19 research postgraduates from an international array of 10 esteemed universities, including Fudan University, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, The University of Auckland, The University of Birmingham, The University of Glasgow, The University of Hong Kong, The University of Johannesburg, The University of Nottingham, The University of Queensland and University College Dublin.

The event, hosted at The University of Hong Kong and concurrently streamed online, provided a vibrant platform for these emerging scholars to present their groundbreaking research.  The hybrid symposium was attended by 113 participants, all engaging in the exchange of ideas under the discerning eyes of an adjudicator panel of renowned faculty members: Professor Roinah Ngunyulu from The University of Johannesburg, Professor Yan Hu from Fudan University, Dr Eileen Gilder from The University of Auckland and Professor Daniel Fong from The University of Hong Kong.

The symposium was not just a forum for sharing knowledge but a celebration of academic excellence.  Each postgraduate presented their research in a concise, impactful three-minute presentation with a single static PowerPoint slide, capturing the essence of their work.  Five outstanding presentation awards were discerningly bestowed upon presenters:

  • Ms Man Lee Chan (The University of Hong Kong) – “Unraveling the Care Needs of Individuals with Progressive Neurological Diseases: A Mixed-Method Study”
  • Ms Yajie Li (The University of Hong Kong) – “Brief Alcohol Intervention plus mHealth Support for Risky Drinkers Attending Accident and Emergency Department”
  • Mr Hlatshwako Nkosinathi (The University of Johannesburg) – “First time Mothers’ Knowledge and Practices on the Nutritional Needs of Infants Aged 0-12 Months in the Shiselweni Region, Eswatini”
  • Ms Arina Nurfianti (The University of Glasgow) – “Post Stroke Cognitive Impairment: Nurses’ Roles in the Assessment and Management in Indonesia”
  • Ms Piyatida Theppradit (The University of Birmingham) – “The Challenges in Developing Paediatric Palliative Care Education Programme for Thai Nurses”

Each presentation underscored the symposium’s commitment to nurturing intellectual growth and fostering collaboration among the next generation of leaders in Nursing and Midwifery, laying a strong foundation for the symposia of the future!
