HKU School of Nursing 30th Anniversary Lecture

The School of Nursing of The University of Hong Kong would like to cordially invite you to join the HKU School of Nursing 30th Anniversary Lecture entitled “Integrating Sustainability into Healthcare Practices” to be delivered by Associate Professor Eugene Liu, Chief Sustainability Officer, National University Health System, National University of Singapore.

Abstract

Integrating Sustainability into Healthcare Practices
Healthcare has a substantial environmental impact, and there is an urgent need for healthcare professionals to change their practices to be more environmentally sustainable. This presentation will address strategies to reduce healthcare’s carbon footprint, including green and value-based care, energy efficiency, waste reduction and a circular economy in healthcare. It will address embedding of green principles in clinical protocols, facility design, and supply chain management. The presentation will also address the role of policy in driving change, the enablers for sustainable healthcare, and some of the lessons learnt in implementation.

About the Speaker

Dr Eugene Liu is a Senior Consultant in the Department of Anaesthesia, National University Hospital. As Chief Sustainability Officer of the National University Health System (NUHS), he led the planning of NUHS’ environmental sustainability work in clinical care, operations and infrastructure, and the development of NUHS’ carbon accounting framework and sustainability reporting. He also serves as Chairman of the Hospital Planning Committee for the redevelopment of National University Hospital (NUH).

Eugene is NUH’s immediate past Chief Executive Officer. He oversaw the growth of NUH’s complex tertiary care that define NUH as an academic medical centre, and the development of value-based care. He led the expansion of NUH’s infrastructure, and the implementation of risk management and emergency preparedness. He led NUH’s response to the outbreak of COVID. He previously served as Head of the Department of Anaesthesia in NUH and as Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs and International Relations of the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore.
